PhD Student Laboratory of Experimental Vascular Medicine

PhD Student Laboratory of Experimental Vascular Medicine

Job description

Project
Elevated plasma triglycerides are an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and are seen in patients suffering from the metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and combined hyperlipidemia. We hypothesize that impaired lipolysis, the first step in TG-rich lipoprotein clearance, is at the basis of this abnormality. Understanding the in vivo regulation of lipolysis will provide handholds for novel strategies to reduce CVD. This project is funded by the Dutch Heart Association.

Tasks
The candidate will work in the Laboratory of Experimental Vascular Medicine. The candidate will perform experimental studies into the molecular steps that underlie lipolysis, including experiments to study the interaction between LPL and GPIHBP1 using plasmon surface resonance (BiaCore) and studies into transcellular LPL transport. The candidate will also help performing in vivo studies directed towards understanding of LPL action in the context of hypertriglyceridemia, including tissue localization in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle in humans and in mouse models of hypertriglyceridemia.

Requirements

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student (master in molecular biology, biochemistry or medical biology).
The following techniques will be used:
• Cloning
• BiaCore
• Immune histochemistry
• RT-PCR
• Animal experiments
• ChIP-seq and co-immunoprecipitation

Conditions of employment

Based on a full-time appointment (36 hours per week), compensation will be according to standard salary levels for PhD students (€2086,- gross per month and maximally €2673,- per month in the final year.)

Contract type
